About the University
Founded in 1365, the University of Vienna (Universität Wien) is a major public research university located in Vienna, Austria, and one of Europe's historic universities. It provides a comprehensive range of Bachelor's, diploma, Master's and doctoral/PhD programmes across humanities, social sciences, law, economics, natural and life sciences, mathematics, computer science, psychology, languages, education and other disciplines. The University of Vienna combines a long academic tradition with internationally recognised research and a highly diverse academic community. In the QS World University Rankings 2026, it is ranked 140th worldwide, while the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 place it 95th globally. The University's academic portfolio spans education, philosophy and religion, history, politics and society, culture and media, mathematics, computer science and technology, natural and life sciences, psychology, health and sport, languages, economics and law. Most Bachelor's and diploma programmes are primarily taught in German and require German proficiency at C1 level for admission. The University also offers a range of Master's and doctoral programmes taught fully or partly in English. International applicants are welcome, but application periods, language requirements, entrance examinations and selection procedures vary considerably by programme and citizenship. Applicants should therefore check the specific admission requirements of their chosen programme before applying.

The University of Vienna accepts international applicants at Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral/PhD levels. Admission requirements and application periods depend on the applicant's citizenship, previous educational qualifications and chosen degree programme. Applicants from outside the EU/EEA, including Afghan citizens, apply under the University's third-country applicant procedures. Foreign educational documents may be subject to formal document, translation and legalisation requirements. Most Bachelor's and diploma programmes require German proficiency at C1 level. International applicants who do not yet meet the required German level may be eligible for a preparatory route in applicable cases. A range of Master's and doctoral programmes are available in English. Some degree programmes require an entrance examination, aptitude test or selection procedure and have special application periods that differ from the University's general admission period. Non-EU/EEA students must also independently satisfy Austrian residence-permit, immigration, health-insurance and financial requirements. University admission does not itself guarantee an Austrian residence permit.
